Types of Hair Loss and Treatment Options
Historically, shaving one's head has symbolized confidence, dominance, strength, aggression, and toughness, dating back to the time of Alexander the Great. This practice was employed by Greek soldiers to prevent enemies from grabbing their hair during hand-to-hand battles. In modern times, a shaved head has become synonymous with success and toughness, embraced by notable figures such as Michael Jordan, Jason Statham, Samuel L. Jackson, The Rock, Vin Diesel, Bruce Willis, and Patrick Stewart.
Hair Loss in Men
A study published in the Journal of Social Psychological and Personality Science in 2012 revealed that a completely bald head is considered the most powerful hairstyle for men. Bald men were perceived as 6% more confident, 10% more masculine, 1 inch taller, 13% stronger, and nearly 4 years older. Men like Michael Jordan, Jason Statham, Samuel L. Jackson, The Rock, Vin Diesel, Bruce Willis, and Patrick Stewart, who embrace a shaved head, exemplify this powerful image.
While men have found solutions for dealing with thinning hair, women facing hair loss often suffer in silence. Hair loss presents differently in men and women, with up to 5% of women under 30 and 60% of those over 70 experiencing hair loss.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, on average, people lose 50 to 100 strands of hair daily, and up to 250 strands on hair-washing days. Female-pattern hair loss is the most common form of hair loss in women, with about 30 million American women experiencing hair thinning over the crown of their heads, known as androgenic alopecia.
Hair Loss in Women
Androgenic alopecia can start in the late teens or later in life, with higher levels of male hormones (androgens) being a common cause. Conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), leading to hyperandrogenism, can contribute to hair loss in women. Treating PCOS often resolves associated hair loss.
Other causes of hair loss in women include low iron storage (Ferritin) levels, thyroid disease, hormonal changes during perimenopause, menopause, pregnancy, skin conditions, acute stress, illnesses, infections, chemotherapy, and certain medications.
Treatment Options
Identifying the root cause is crucial in treating hair loss. Treatment options include over-the-counter supplements, stress management, oral prescription medications, topical solutions and creams, laser combs, stem cell therapy, PRP (platelet-rich plasma) injections, and hair transplantation.
